CELL PHONES Nokia has announced a new line of cell phones: the Luxury Cell Phone. Now, you may think - what more can you do with a cell phone? You'd be surprised. These cell phones are custom made for the user to fit perfectly into his/her hands. They are adorned with silver and gold. But, the key is the insides - outside gold and silver has been around for awhile, but these phones use the best custom materials for each individual phone from the inside out. And, they retail for around $21,000 US. Yes, you read that correctly - twenty one THOUSAND dollars in United States currency. http://press.nokia.com/PR/200201/845684_5.html
HELP AGAINST ANTRHAX You may have heard of the program you can download that harnesses part of your computer to take part of a SuperComputer to look for intelligent life in the universe. Well, now there are new programs designed to create Super Computers to do complex tasks that are a bit closer to home. The newest is the opportunity to have your machine participate in a program to find a molecule that might stop the process that makes anthrax lethal. For more information and to download the small program that will run in the background of your machine, go to http://www.intel.com/cure. The basic idea is that with thousands of machines all running this program, data is distributed to the computers to be processed creating - in essence - a Super Computer.

12/21/01 STARS TICKETS Something weird happened to me today: You guys all know how I'm a REALLY BIG STARS FAN. Well, today, my cell phone rang from some obscure area code. I answered it and the lady apologized and said she was trying to get the Dallas Stars Box Office. I told her the number was 214-GO-STARS and she said she thought that was what she had called. Well, after we had hung up, I wrote down the number for the Box Office and figured out what the actual numbers were, then wrote down my cell phone number:

214-GO-STARS

214 46 78277 <--- numeric

214 46 08277 <--- my cell phone number

Weird! It's only ONE number different! Change the "S" or "7" to a zero ("0") and you have my cell phone number! So, I guess that means that you can call 214-GO-0TARS (Go Zero-Tars!) to get me on my cell phone!

DESPERADOS The Dallas Cowboys have a brand new Arena football team that is starting up soon with Joe Avezzano (the Cowboys special teams coach) acting as head coach. TIRES Goodyear Tires announced that they will be developing a new tire that is made by urethane (a polymer made of 2 basic ingredients) instead of rubber (also a polymer, but much more complex with over 30 ingredients). So what is so special about this tire? Well, it is almost completely made of urethane removing the need for air. This means the tire is blowout-proof and will not have tread (preventing tread separation). Another nice feature is that this tire could be made in any color conceivable. What do you think of purple tires on your Ford Aspire? Check out the CNN story at: http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/science/08/31/no.rubber.tires/index.html

10/31/01 ENGLISH AIR An Englishman has set a new record for the highest flight ever achieved using ordinary toy balloons. Ian Ashpole, 46, attached himself to 600 toy balloons filled with helium and then ascended to 11,000 feet before the balloons started popping. He then cut himself free from the balloons using a knife and parachuted safely to the ground near Chatteris, in Cambridgeshire. Ashpole broke his own record of 10,000 feet set five years ago. He also holds the record for bungee jumping from a balloon. For details see http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,47965,00.html

10/18/01 DALLAS SOARS As mentioned in an edition of "Today's Fun Stuff", Dallas Soars is just beginning. Dallas Soars is a program that the City of Dallas is launching this month, placing 200 pegasus' all around Dallas. These pegasus' are being painted in a variety of ways. I want to have a contest among my friends and coworkers to see who can get the most photos taken of them with different pegasus' around Dallas during the reign of Dallas Soars (scheduled to continue through February). Before fully planning this "contest", I wanted to find out your interest level. So, please please please take 10 seconds to reply to pick an option listed below as to what you are or are not willing to pay, or even if you are interested in participating at all.  www.dallassoars.com

  * FREE (I want to participate but with no cost and no prize money)
  * $10 (Ten dollars per person with the overall winner winning the entire pot of money)

HIGH SPEED PHOTO (site submitted by Miles Wortham) High speed photography can capture images unseen (or, more accurately, unrecognized) by the human eye which operates at a slower "frame rate" than special cameras. Check out some very unique photographs including splattering drops, tennis ball connecting with racket, and more caught by high speed cameras at http://www.pacsci.org/public/education/gallery/high_speed_photos/student_photos.html
ULTIMATE CUBICLE Work is tough enough as it is. But to compound the "angst" (if you will), we are often shoved into little boxes called "cubicles" that leave a lot to be desired, the cold impersonal grey carpet and steel a stark barrier between you and your coworkers. Well, Scott Adams - the creator of "Dilbert" (maybe you've heard of it?) - has heard a lot about job life in his years as an office satirist and has decided to attempt a launch at a new cubicle system aimed at improving office life with personalization. Personalization? Yes, that's right. This new cubicle system will include the ability to slide in new modules according to your personal likes and dislikes including aquariums, hammocks, daisies that perk up when you enter your cube and much, much more. For a discussion about this idea with Scott Adams, go to http://www.cnn.com/2001/COMMUNITY/08/30/adams/ and then click on the links on the page to see more info including a bunch of pictures. Very cool stuff.

8/10/01 BOW-WOW What did your dog say? A new device called "Bow-Lingual" can tell you! It consists of a collar with microphone and processor that can identify 6 emotions of the dog: frustration, happiness, desire, sadness, alarm, and self-expression. The dog's emotion can then be transmitted to your mobile telephone so you can monitor your dog's feelings while away from the house. Okay. Whatever. SNOCONES Widely considered the best sno-cone shop in Dallas, Aunt Stella's has been serving customers for over 20 years. What sets it apart from others? Well, beyond the extensive flavor choices, Aunt Stella's uses shaved ice rather than the usual ice chunks you get at most sno cone shops. The shaving of the ice provides a finer powder which soaks up the syrup. YUM! Check out Aunt Stella's at 2002 W. Clarendon Dr., Dallas TX 75208 or call at 214.946.1431.
OUT OF A FLOWER Freshly made sorbet made with flowers? Yup, that's right. "Out of a Flower" mixes in different (consumable) flowers into their freshly made sorbet. This stuff is a really unique way to impress your guests. Call 214.630.3136 for more information.

New this year is the inclusion of ALL 538 billionaires in the world, including "old" money. Topping the list was, of course, Bill Gates with an estimated worth of $58.7 billion. To understate, "That's a lot of money". If you make $50,000 per year, it would take you 1,174,000 years to earn $58,700,000,000. To earn $58.7 billion in one year, you would have to earn $111,681.89 per minute! Texans include Mark Cuban (ranked 363) with $1.4 billion and Michael Dell (ranked 27th) with $10.5 billion

6/15/01 GARBAGE CAR How about a sports car that runs on rotten vegetables? The first car with this capability was unveiled recently across the great ocean I fondly refer to as the Atlantic. It is a REAL sports car, with streamlined design, 0-60 in less than 6 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. It's certainly not commercially viable at this time, but this could be the car of the future. Anyone remember "Back to the Future" when Doc showed up from the future with a Mr. Fusion attached to the DeLorean? Go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1309000/1309201.stm to read the full article. In case you didn't already know this - and I'm assuming most of you do - "The Princess Bride" is the best movie that has ever been made. Well, it's my favorite at least. Anyway, the new DVD will include commentary by director Rob Reiner, commentary by author William Goldman, "As You Wish" documentary with all-new interviews with several of the stars of the movie including Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn, Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin, and more, footage shot by Cary Elwes during the making of the movie, 2 original featurettes, and more. AOL VIRUS? This one just cracks me up - I have long maintained that AOL is a virus because the program is so intrusive on computers and has made changes on computers I've had to support in the past that had to be undone to make the computer work. But, despite this, AOL really is not a virus. Lately, though, an email has been circulating that states there is a new virus and the virus file is called "AOL.exe". Users of AOL have been deleting AOL.exe off of there computers. The problem? This email is a hoax and AOL.exe is the main program file for America Online. If it is removed, AOL no longer works. Sabatoged!
6/8/01 OPT OUT When you currently go to web sites, a lot of personal information is often collected and sent to advertisers without your knowledge. Network Advertising Initiative is a trade group that is concerned about your privacy. They have set up a web site that allows you to opt out of this "secret" personal information gathering. If you visit your site, you pick which of the advertising agencies to opt out of and then a cookie is created on your machine that will not allow any of those companies to continue collecting data about you when you are browsing. To successfully opt out, you must visit this web site and opt out on each computer you use as it writes cookies to that computer only. And, go to the site for each different browser you use. The site is http://www.networkadvertising.org. It only takes about 15 seconds to complete.
MONETARY POLICY Could you do any better than Alan Greenspan? Well, find out by going to the Swiss central bank's web site, then search for "Monetary Policy Simulation Game". This will take you to a page where you can download the free game then oversee a nation's economy, tweaking various factors to control it. http://www.snb.ch/e/search/index.html
STRANGE BUT TRUE (disclaimer: some of the stories are REALLY weird) Jim Romenesko is an online publisher that gathers real stories onto his web site. The stories are all a bit off-beat or just downright weird. For example, one headline reads "Woman with 206 cats in court. Lawyer says she skipped neutering to avoid traumatizing pets". Another "Billy-Bob Teeth win over Bubba Teeth in jury trial". Go to http://www.obscurestore.com
6/7/01 COMPU-BUSE Some of you have already seen this, but I thought it was pretty interesting so you get to read it again. A survey by British PC maker Novatech has revealed that one PC in every four has been physically abused by its owner. The company received 4200 replies to its survey and was surprised to discover the range of people who admitted to damaging their PCs. Most of the assaults involved damage to the keyboard, typically from a fist. A few computer users actually admitted to knocking their PCs off their desk. At least one manager was reported to have thrown a laptop across the room after its owner presented less than expected sales figures. The survey results show that many computer users think of their PC as a person and become emotionally attached to it. When it fails to meet their expectations, they may react to it as if it were a person. For details see http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,44284,00.html
BLOCKBUSTER Blockbuster customers who have paid a late fee at any time between 1/1/92 and 4/1/01 may be eligible for a piece of the settlement they are offering in a bunch of class action lawsuits currently in court. TV TECH A new camera will be debuting tonight in the NBA finals - the TotalView Camera. Total View cameras have a wide angle lense which provides a 360 degree (all around, for those with shaky math memories) feed directly into a specialized computer program which uses software to "undistort" the image into a 2 dimensional image of the entire court. This then allows the video engineers to dynamically zoom onto any area of the court at any time giving a great deal of flexibility to the television network. For more information on this technology, go to http://www.msnbc.com/news/582440.asp
NEW TIRES Maybe you've seen a wheel somewhere - on someone else's car, in the showroom, on the Internet - but you haven't purchased it because you're not sure what it will look like on your car. It's a virtual dressing room for your car!
6/5/01 ALTERNATIVE FUELS As you probably already know, there are two current hybrid cars on the market - the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. Both of these cars get much better gas mileage than traditional vehicles through the use of two systems of power: a regular combustion engine and batteries. The batteries actually become charged through normal driving, and the vehicle uses both power sources to drive it. With the additional concern of consumers and the government on the environment many car manufacturers are continuing to seek new ways to provide an environmentally friendly vehicle that still has the power of traditional automobiles. The current method being explored is fuel cell cars. GM recently introduced its newest fuel cell car in development for eventual release to the general public named the HydroGen1. What drives this vehicle? Hydrogen. Well, Hydrogen mixing with Oxygen to produce energy and a byproduct of water... To learn more about what may be the next generation of cars you drive, check out the article on the HydroGen1 at http://carpoint.msn.com/jump/news/jgnews_4020126_6.asp. 6/4/01 NEPAL This one is just too bizarre not to include. On Friday night, Prince Dipendra of Nepal is believed to have gone on a shooting spree killing his father and mother - the king and queen - and 6 other family members before turning the gun on himself. After shooting himself in the head, Prince Dipendra went into a coma. The State Council then named him the King of Nepal - okay, wait a second, he shoots up his family killing 8 and then shoots himself and gets named the KING? Anyway, last night, the "King" of Nepal passed away, so now the young (he was 29) king will be succeeded by his uncle, currently Prince Gyanendra, as the country's new king. Even weirder is the statement that Prince Gyanendra has released after the shootings on Sunday saying that the killings were the result of "accidental" automatic weapons fire. See more at http://www.dallasnews.com/world/384841_napal_04int.AR.html, http://www.dallasnews.com/world/384404_nepalfamily03e.html, or http://www.dallasnews.com/world/383271_nunepal_02int..html
DAVID MANNING Have you ever seen a movie ad that listed a glowing review from film critic David Manning? He's had nice words for "The Animal" and "A Knight's Tale" recently and been used many times in the past for other Sony Pictures films. The only problem? He doesn't exist. That's right, Sony Pictures made him up. What makes this even more outrageous is how unnecessary this is. I mean, even the worst movies in the world always have glowing reviews attached to them from real live people. Reviewer Tait Lifto had this to say about Sony's use of a fake reviewer "...the feel bad decision of the year. Sony Pictures delivers a new low. 2 thumbs down!" To read more from Newsweek who uncovered this hoax, see http://www.msnbc.com/news/581770.asp
TAX CUTS You should get a check! With the recent passing of the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, large tax cuts are not only looming on the horizon, but are already here! The tax rate cuts include a RETROACTIVE tax cut on the first $12,000 of taxable income. What this means is that you should receive a check this summer of the rolled back tax. This equates to around $300 for singles, $500 for heads of households and $600 for joint filers. More tax cuts will be rolled out over the next 10 years. For more information, go to http://www.dallasnews.com/business/stories/384669_perfi_04bus.AR.html

JUMPING SHIP So, James Jeffords quite the Republican Party, shifting control of the Senate to the Democrats. Wow. I'm amazed that this is allowed. I mean, wouldn't you feel cheated as someone that voted for Mr. Jeffords on the Republican ticket if he suddenly changed alliances? You didn't vote for an independent. You voted for a Republican. And now, he switches, and causes a ripple effect that will completely change the face of the political arena until the next election or possibly beyond. See the article on the switch in today's DMN or at: http://www.dallasnews.com/politics/376554_jeffords_25nat.html

AOL America Online will be raising it's monthly rates in July to $23.90 per month. "You've got high prices!"
