Growing up, we traveled a great deal across the United States in our vehicle as part of our family vacations. With limited funds, driving made the most sense for a family of 5. My memories include infamous car trips such as "The One with Five Flat Tires" and "The One where our Transmission Blew Out... Twice".
Mementoes help bring back the memories of trips long gone, now. At first, I attempted to capture these memories by collecting pins. Specifically, I obtained quite a few of the "Sheriff" badges found at most tourist shops at the time. Shaped like a Sheriff badge, they included a location and fake "jewel" in the center. For awhile, I collected the pins on a tri-corner hat purchased in Williamsburg in 1986 or so. After a few years of running out of space on the hat and finding the "jewels" popping off my cheap pins, I rethought my collection idea. I ended up changing my mind and I began collecting shot glasses instead.
So, while my collection grew quite nicely over the years, I remind myself that it really begins about 10-11 years too late to fully capture my childhood explorations. But, my collection remains largely representative of many trips although some were gifts from people for places I've never been. I write this page primarily for myself - to capture the information before my memory fails me on the source of some shot glasses. Dates are approximate unless so noted.
